About the Experience

This beginner friendly hike is a nice way to start the day, with a 360 degree scenic reward at the top.

The river mountain trail starts in the foothills of Bootleg Canyon, where both mountain bikers and bighorn sheep try their luck on the narrow trails and jutting rocks. You will fit your daypacks and begin the approach from the trailhead at the base of the mountains.

The walk starts out leisurely, as the trail winds past desert homes and bike routes. Those sights fall from view quickly, as you begin to gain altitude and start up the trail. Winding around rocks, creosote bushes, and the occasional cactus, the trail makes it's way upward to the summit of Black Mountain.

A short break at the top allows us to take in the scenery before moving across the saddle toward the final summit destination, where a light breakfast can be enjoyed with the views of Lake Mead.

This trail is roughly 5-6 miles roundtrip and is beginner friendly, but you will definitely get your legs moving and your heart pumping with the 1,200' elevation gain/loss. Join us for a morning workout in the river mountains!
